United made hard work of beating the Finnish team. They missed two penalties in the first eighteen minutes. Gary Kelly failed in the fifteenth minute after the impressive David Hopkin had been brought down. Three minutes later Harry Kewell was impeded in the box and he also missed after taking the resultant penalty himself. Once again there were wholesale changes at Half-Time. United replaced Martin Hiden with Ian Harte at Left Back, Michael Duberry with Danny Granville at Left Half, David Hopkin with Alf-Inge Haaland at Right Half, Harry Kewell by Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink at Centre Forward and Alan Smith was replced by David Batty at Inside Right. It was two of the substitutes that produced the only goal of the game with ten minutes left on the clock. David Batty made the through pass that put Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink through the middle for the striker to slot the ball past the keeper.
